Open to senior product leadership roles

Jamie Stray

Product leader. Routing, logistics and the people who build them.

I lead product at Tesco Technology, where I rebuilt how Tesco routes its deliveries and created the navigation product its drivers use every day. I've spent 14 years turning complex operational problems into products people rely on, starting as a developer and growing into product leadership. I lead three product areas and have trained many product managers along the way.

My career so far

Each role built on the one before it.

more judgments processed by a team of 12, using the court judgement execution system I designed and delivered as an engineer for the European Court of Human Rights.

Where I am now

2022 to present

Senior Product Manager, Transport Routing

Tesco Technology

32 depots

I rebuilt the Tesco Routing Platform and took it live in 26 UK depots within one financial year, then into central Europe. It now plans millions of safe and legal miles a day for 4,500 HGVs across 5 countries.

use Tesco Navigation, a product I championed from the start. It connects the route we planned with the route that was driven.

  • I own the product vision for fulfilment and transport routing
  • I lead two more product teams: third-party logistics, and grocery home shopping planning
  • I've trained many associate and graduate PMs into full product managers
  • I speak for Tesco at conferences

Case studies

Four products I've led or launched: who they were for, what was broken, what I did, and what changed.

Rebuilding the Tesco Routing Platform across five countries

Tesco Technology, Senior Product Manager

32 depotsacross 5 countries, with 26 UK depots live within one financial year
Who it's for
The depot and transport teams who plan Tesco's deliveries, and the drivers who run them.
The problem
Fulfilment and transport routing needed a complete transformation. A slow rebuild would leave the business carrying commercial risk for longer.
What I did
I owned the product vision and rebuilt routing end to end, moving fast without guessing.
  • Continuous discovery with real end users and stakeholders
  • Rapid experiments to validate ideas before scaling them
  • Tight prioritisation of the highest-impact features
What changed
Live in 26 UK depots within one financial year of inception, then rolled out to central Europe: 32 depots across 5 countries. The platform now routes 4,500 HGVs to 10,000 serviceable locations, planning millions of safe and legal miles every day.

Creating Tesco Navigation for 25,000 drivers

Tesco Technology, Senior Product Manager

25,000drivers on a product that didn't exist before
Who it's for
Tesco's 25,000 drivers, and the teams who plan their routes.
The problem
Once a route left the planning system, it was hard to see how it was actually driven. The driver experience on the road also needed to improve.
What I did
I made the case for a navigation product built alongside Routing, won support for it, and drove it from idea to launch.
What changed
Tesco Navigation now serves 25,000 drivers. It closes the loop between what was planned and what was driven, improving operational efficiency and the driver experience.

Moving customer feedback before production

Stair Right Joinery, Business Analyst

90% feweramendments in production, and a 50% rise in customer NPS
Who it's for
Customers ordering bespoke staircases, and the production team building them.
The problem
Customers often asked for changes once a staircase was nearly finished, so the team had to rework a near-complete product.
What I did
I introduced a new process to create 3D renders of each customer's staircase, which they could review in their own home before production started.
What changed
Changes moved to the model stage. Amendments in production fell by 90%, and customer NPS rose by 50%.

Creating a clinical trial app for 10,000 patients

MDGroup, Business Analyst and Product Owner

+35%patient retention, with 10,000 patients across 12+ clinical research organisations
Who it's for
Patients taking part in clinical trials, and the contract research organisations (CROs) running those trials, with ethics committees and regulators overseeing every change.
The problem
Patients needed a simple way to interact with their clinical trial. The app had to be designed, built and shipped quickly, without ever compromising compliance.
What I did
  • Wrote user stories and acceptance criteria the team could build from directly
  • Ran trade-off analysis to stay on track with strategy commitments
  • Translated between developers and stakeholders in technical and non-technical language
What changed
I created the app from inception to delivery, and shipped it in 9 months. It's used by 12+ clinical research organisations and 10,000 patients, and increased patient retention by 35%. Delivery held to ethics committee commitments, GCP, GDPR, ISO 27001 and HIPAA.

How I lead product

I run the same loop on a single feature or a rollout across five countries, and it's how I coach the product managers I work with.

  1. Step 1

    Discover

Spend time with real users and stakeholders until the problem is clear.

Continuous discovery with Tesco's end users
  2. Step 2

    Prove

Run small, fast experiments and let the evidence decide what's worth building.

    Rapid experiment cycles on Routing
  3. Step 3

    Ship

Turn the winning ideas into clear stories and acceptance criteria, and get them live.

Shipping at MDGroup under four standards
  4. Step 4

    Scale

Roll out with the same care at the 32nd depot as at the first.

26 UK depots in one financial year
  5. Step 5

    Grow the team

Coach product managers to run the loop themselves.

Many associate and graduate PMs grown into full PMs
